Talking With Wasp SYW

I recently had the opportunity to hang out and talk with Wasp SYW. The dude was kind enough to take me along to paint a spot with his crew and so I decided he needs to get some recognition for his work.

What got you started/ What inspired you
Its always kind of silly to me, to answer these questions. but fuck it..

i hung out with a kid in middle school who had an older brother, who at the time was making a little bit of noise in the louisville area. DANK was his word. he was doing pannels, highways, chill spots..and would flash photos to us every once in a while. Thanksgiving 04' he took me and his brother to a chill wall before we went to dinner with his family. we kicked back, blew on a little tree, and watched it go down. when we hopped back in the car, i asked if it would be cool if i started to come to that spot..i got the "okay" and those were the first walls i did..

Inspirations, shit man, anyone who was doing work locally when i had started, and currently. and my crew, SYW inspires me a lot, as far as style, and motivation. HIENA always bringin funk to the table. and outside of the crew, JIGL, the MFK'S, RTD has been producing a lot of good work...

Why do you paint?
Release. It is something i can look forward to, something i can express myself through. The times i have had with my crew mates and friends are un-explainable. It is a blast to travel, eat good, smoke good...and just be involved with some creative dudes who know how to have a good time. The feeling of doing something your not supposed to be doing, or being somewhere that you know you shouldn't be, those are what i paint for.

Whats the scene like in Louisville?
psh, whats the scene like everywhere?! it has its ups and downs. sometimes we can all get along, sometimes people feel like they need to prove themselves. honestly i am trying to exclude myself from the so called "scene" we have here. i want to focus my time on the rails, and things that will advance me to the next step. I will give a shout out to Louisville though, i do love my hometown and the people in it. Things get old, and played out. but i couldn't ask for anything else.
How long have you been painting?

2005 is when i did my first few trains.

Do you consider your work as art?

My graffiti? ha...fuck no. RAP LETTERS
Have you tried to stop?

Opinion on Midwest scene?
TRAINS. its about the rails around here. all of the surrounding cities have the street boppers, the "broadway bullies" as FRANK would say. But as far as my opinion, i like it a lot. its always fun to hit the close cities, link with some homies, and trade stories.

Has graffiti ever fucked you over, changed your life goals?
Fucked me over? hmmm...have i caught a case? yes.

Changed life goals...its hard to even say. every day i am reaching to the next level, whether that be at work, my family and home life, or graffiti. so if anything, it has a motivating aspect on my life.

Advice for people who decide to roll through Louisville?

Get some good eating in! check out local brewery's.

dont sleep on our alleys, and check out some warehouses. we have a few hidden gems around town...

Emte has been a solid presence on the Chicago scene for over 20 years. Always about putting in work, its been hard to catch up with him. The Momentum Team got the chance to sit down and talk to the man about life and his gallery Kings Cave.

-Name and Crew(s)

My name is Emte and my crews are in order: SAW, which stands for Suckas Are Wasted, KYM, Known Yet Mysterious, and TNB crew, which originated out of New York. Started by founder and President T-Kid170. The Nasty Boys.

- What year did you start? and why?

I started to write in 1986, and toyed around with the idea till about '92. I consider myself being born in 1992 as far as TRUE graffiti, because that's when I painted my first clean train.

I was very inspired by the movie Style Wars, and book Subway Art. I just felt we had to continue the tradition and believed in how important painting clean trains is to our art form.

-What made you want to progress?

Like anything that I get involved in, I put in nothing but pure passion for this aerosol sport. I want to continue to evolve and stay inspired. Stay relevant. That's what's important to me.

-What was the graff scene like back then?

The graff scene was a lot less mainstream back then. It was more covert, more..you know, more or less you kept to yourself, you painted with your crew's. You never went out and bragged who you were or tried to show face and meet people. I don't really get that from the writers today. Everybody wants to know everybody and drop crew's like its the flavor of the month. But who am I? I'm just an opinionated writer.

-Whats the name of your gallery?

Well, Amuse dubbed it "King's Cave." I'm a firm believer that a nickname should be GIVEN. I started off at first with The Belly Project, but that was in the beginning stages. Now I guess it's becoming like a King's Cave, where everyone who has style, some kind of talent, or invite of some sort can come to burn.

-When did you first go there?

I went there with a few crew mates in 2010. We went in, scouted the area, and painted something small. Eventually, a year later it was wearing away because the walls were so out of shape. So we kind of restored all the walls, rolled and painted them, till we eventually had what we have now. It's been an ongoing work in progress, labor of love.

-What do you hope to come of your space? any future plans?

I hope that King's Cave continues to grow and prosper. And that it makes me a proud curator in the near future. I want it to continue to snowball and become a big art extravaganza for people who happen to stumble upon it. I feel like we're doing something very special.

-Favorite color?

Aqua Turquoise. We use to call it Aqua Turkey.

-Last words?

Yes. My methods may be questionable at times, but my results have always been obvious. I'll do whatever it takes to get my point across in any form or fashion. Whether it be thru bike building or aerosol visions. All I can say to everyone out there is to stay creative and to never forget where you came from. Continue to push forward. Peace.
