18 year old Sebastian Perez was sentenced 8 year in state prison, without parole, for pleading guilty to three vandalism charges and pot possession. He promised to “finish school, help clean up the graffiti, and get a job.” Judge Marisela Saldana led on to a long, emotional lecture after his plea. The court roughly estimated $7300 in damage, but that’s just the comparison to the $140,000 Texas taxpayers are willing to take and keep Perez locked up.This is also the state that is dealing with the very controversial Immigration Detention Center. Are these people looking for justice or are they behaving malevolent?
19 year old, Ralph Mirabal was sentenced to 8 years in prison with a $5000 fine for vandalizing 30 something businesses and homes. He had agreed to a plea deal stating that he would join the Army, but never came through with it. He must now, serve 2 years in prison before he is eligible for parole. Maribal isn’t very remorseful for his actions, but does he have a reason to be? He chose to tag, so why should he have to join the army for knowing how to use a can?
These two taggers are being punished for vandalizing private property. 19 year old Maribal is eligible for parole, after two years served in prison. Maribal showed no remorse for his actions, and didn’t follow up with his plea deal. On the other hand, 18 year old Sebastian Perez was sentenced to8 year in state prison, in total, without parole. Maribal had more cases of vandalism, didn’t care if he had to sit in prison for at least 2 years, and he’s still eligible for parole. Why can’t Perez have this justice as well? He may have had pot and convicted on 3 charges of vandalism, but he was very remorseful. Maybe it’s not justice that’s being served, but maybe a popularity contest on several levels.
